Yosemite has been at the center of efforts to draw attention to the Trump administration’s squeeze on national park staff and services. Just last week, the New York Times reported that rangers are now scarcely seen at entrance posts collecting fees or throughout the park preventing visitors from littering or flying drones over sensitive areas.
As someone who spends a lot of time in the San Gabriel Mountains, a wilderness and recreation area on the doorstep of L.A. County’s 10 million people, I can’t help but think: Welcome to the club, Yosemite.
If the public’s trashy treatment of places like Yosemite concerns you, please spare a thought for the San Gabriel Mountains and other federally managed recreation areas far closer to big cities.
